NCFE Level 1 Functional Skills Qualification in English is a GCSE grade 1 to 3 (D to G) equivalent and nationally recognised certification. Method Of Assessment ​

This qualification will be assessed via 1 controlled assessment and 2 external assessments.

The external assessments comprise the following components:

  • Reading
  • Writing

The controlled assessment comprises 

  • Speaking, 
  • Listening and 
  • Communicating.

Reading:

Test consists of controlled response and open response questions.

Duration = 60 minutes

Number of marks = 30

Writing:

Test comprises two tasks where 42% of marks assess spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Duration = 60 minutes

Number of marks = 40

Speaking, Listening and Communicating

  • Presentation 5 minutes 
  • Question & Answer Session 3-5 minutes 
  • Group Discussion 4-6 Minutes
