Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

Almost all workplaces are now reliant on electrical equipment, which means a career in Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) can be a lucrative and stable decision. This Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) course will teach you about the tasks that are involved with PAT and how you can stay safe when testing electrical equipment.

The course begins by introducing you to PAT and summarising some of the risks that are involved and the relevant legislation, after which you learn about risk assessments and the five steps to identifying and evaluating risks and recording and implementing your findings. This unit also covers Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) 2013.

Next, you will be given a closer look at how to reduce and control the risks of PAT, which includes choosing and inspecting the right equipment, pre-use checks, using and storing equipment safely, fire safety and how to react to emergency procedures. Finally, you will learn about testing itself, general testing tips, the different types of tests, such as Class I (earthed), Class II (double insulated) and earth leakage, how to test your own equipment and IEC and extension leads. This last module also teaches you how to respond safely to equipment failure.

Understanding how to be thorough with Portable Appliance Testing is important for anyone who is responsible for health and safety management in low-risk workplaces such as offices. This course provides you with the latest accurate advice and information so you can take your career to the next level, and even consider undergoing practical PAT training.

  1. Pat testing

Brilliant course ,would recommend to anyone who’s thinking of pat testing ,also has risk and H&S questions.

  2. Useful, but could be better

I found the course content useful, and fairly coherent. However the voiceover was poor, often mispronounced words and was quite distracting. In addition, it was awkward to mark units as completed. I went to take the mock test, and discovered I’d somehow taken the final test.
There was also some contradictory information. In unit 3, I think, it suggested that having a PAT tested sticker ,giving the next date of testing was not best practice, as it encouraged workers to assume a level of safety, rather than being vigilant with visual checks. In the next unit, it said these stickers should be used. And, there was no ” symbol” present in the info in unit 4 ,indicating if an appliance was class 2.

  3. 4

Would have benefitted from some diagrams of PAT testing machines being set up rather than just descriptions. I’ve used PAT testing machines before so not a problem for me though hence 4/5
