Guided Learning Hours (GLH) & Total Qualification Time (TQT)
The ATHE Level 4 Extended Diploma in Law requires 1200 hours of Total Qualification Time (TQT), equivalent to 120 credits (where one credit equals 10 hours of learning).
This time is divided into two categories:
Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 480 Hours
These are the hours where you are under the immediate guidance or supervision of a tutor or training provider. This includes Structured Learning, Tutor Support, Assessment Guidance, and review sessions following the submission of your internally assessed work.
Independent Study: 720 Hours
These are the estimated hours you will spend learning independently to meet the qualification standards. This includes your research, Assignment Preparation, Self-Directed Study, etc.

There are no formal exams for this qualification. Instead, you will be assessed through internally assessed assignments for each of the four units. Unit-by-Unit Evaluation: Each of the four units is assessed independently. You will complete one comprehensive assignment per unit, designed to showcase your understanding of key legal outcomes.

Grading & Results
Your performance is measured against clear “Pass,” “Merit,” and “Distinction” assessment criteria. To achieve a specific grade for a unit, you must meet all the learning outcomes at that standard. These unit results are then converted into points to determine your final qualification grade.
How Your Grade is Calculated
The ATHE Level 4 Extended Diploma in Law consists of four mandatory units, each equally weighted at 30 credits. Points are awarded based on your achievement in each unit:
- Pass: 90 points (Meets all Pass criteria)
- Merit: 120 points (Meets all Pass and Merit criteria)
- Distinction: 150 points (Meets all Pass, Merit, and Distinction criteria)
Overall Qualification Grading Structure
Your final grade is determined by adding the points from all four units together. The total points required are:

Note: If a learner does not meet the “Pass” standards for all units, they will receive a Fail for the qualification, though they may still receive credit certification for any individual units successfully passed.
Entry Requirements
This qualification is intended for learners aged 19 and above. Applicants should typically hold one of the following:
- A GCE Advanced level profile with achievement in 2 or more subjects supported by 5 or more GCSEs at grades 4 (C) and above
- A Level 3 qualification in law or legal studies such as the ATHE Level 3 Diploma in Law
- An Access to Higher Education Certificate delivered by an approved further education institute and validated by an Access Validating Agency
- Other equivalent international qualifications
Learners whose first language is not English should have English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5, CEFR B2, CAE 162+, or PTE Academic 42–49.
