The NCFE Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) is a nationally recognised qualification designed for individuals currently working in a teaching or training role, or those looking to enter the sector with a more advanced foundation than the introductory Level 3 Award.

What is the NCFE Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training?

The Level 4 Certificate (formerly known as CTLLS) is a regulated qualification that sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). It is intended for those who have a significant role in teaching and training and wish to develop their professional practice. Unlike introductory courses, the Level 4 Certificate requires a commitment to practical teaching hours, ensuring that the skills you learn are immediately applicable to real-world classrooms or corporate training environments.

Guided Learning Hours (GLH) & Total Qualification Time (TQT)

The NCFE Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training consists of:

Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 80 Hours

Qualification Structure and Credits

The NCFE Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training consists of 5 mandatory units and 1 optional unit, totalling 36 credits (21 from mandatory units and 15 from the optional unit). At least 21 credits must be at Level 4 or above.

Method Of Assessment

Each learner must create a portfolio of evidence generated from appropriate assessment tasks, which demonstrates achievement of all the learning outcomes associated with each unit. Upon completing each unit, learners must declare that the work produced is their own, and the Assessor will countersign this. 

The learner will complete internally assessed work in accordance with the qualification specification.

Teaching Practice Requirements

To ensure your qualification meets strict awarding body standards, you must complete a practical teaching component alongside your theoretical studies. Here is a summary of the NCFE Level 4 CET teaching practice and observation requirements:

Practical Teaching Hours

  • 30-Hour Requirement: You must complete a minimum of 30 hours of teaching practice and 3 observed sessions (totalling at least 3 hours, with each session lasting minimum 30 minutes). A qualified supervisor or colleague can carry out the observations and provide witness testimony.
  • Diversity of Practice: To get the most out of your training, your hours should ideally cover various levels, different teaching settings, and a mix of both group and individual instruction.

Observed and Assessed Sessions

  • Minimum Observations: You are required to be observed for at least 3 hours in total.
  • Session Structure: This must be split across a minimum of 3 separate sessions, each lasting at least 30 minutes.
  • Placement: All observations must take place in a genuine work environment (either through current employment or a voluntary placement). Simulations are not permitted for this qualification.

Observer Qualifications & Approval

Finding a qualified observer is essential for your portfolio to be valid. Your chosen observer must:

  • Hold a Level 5 teaching qualification (or higher).
  • Have relevant, verifiable teaching experience.
  • Be independent (not employed by the same organisation as you).
  • Be pre-approved: Before any observations take place, you must submit your observer’s details to One Education for formal approval.

Compliance Note

These requirements are mandatory to satisfy NCFE and Ofqual standards. Spacing your observations throughout the course is recommended to demonstrate your professional growth and response to feedback.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is suitable for learners aged 16 and above. There are no formal academic entry requirements; however, learners should have a reasonable level of literacy and communication skills to complete written assignments successfully.

Learners whose first language is not English should ideally have English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.0 or above.
