NCFE Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training equips aspiring educators with essential teaching skills, assessment techniques, and classroom confidence to deliver engaging lessons and support effective learning professional outcomes.

NATHE Level 3 Award in Education and Training

Overview

The NCFE Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) is a nationally recognised qualification designed for individuals currently working in a teaching or training role, or those looking to enter the sector with a more advanced foundation than the introductory Level 3 Award.

This qualification balances pedagogical theory with practical application, providing you with the tools to plan, deliver, and evaluate effective learning sessions in the further education and skills sector.

What is the NCFE Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training?

The Level 4 Certificate (formerly known as CTLLS) is a regulated qualification that sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). It is intended for those who have a significant role in teaching and training and wish to develop their professional practice. Unlike introductory courses, the Level 4 Certificate requires a commitment to practical teaching hours, ensuring that the skills you learn are immediately applicable to real-world classrooms or corporate training environments.

The course was audited and updated on: 18th May, 2026

Frequently Asked Questions

This qualification is intended for individuals who are working or planning to work as teachers, tutors, or trainers in the post-16 education sector, including Further Education colleges, adult learning providers, and workplace training environments. It is also suitable for instructors delivering training to small groups.

Learners are typically required to be 19 years old and should have good literacy skills. Most learners will either already be in a teaching role or have access to a suitable placement where they can complete practical teaching requirements.

Yes. This is a work-based qualification, so learners must complete a minimum of 30 hours of teaching practice in an appropriate educational or training setting.

To achieve the qualification, learners must complete a total of 36 credits. This includes 21 credits from mandatory units and at least 15 credits from optional units, depending on the chosen learning pathway.

Assessment is carried out internally by the training provider and externally quality-assured by NCFE. Learners are assessed through a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates both theoretical understanding and practical teaching skills.

The qualification is generally designed to be completed within one academic year, although actual duration may vary depending on the learner’s study pace and teaching placement availability.

Learners can progress to higher-level qualifications such as the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, or move into roles including further education lecturer, trainer, or workplace learning facilitator.

The Level 4 Certificate provides a deeper and more practical focus on teaching, learning, and assessment compared to Level 3 qualifications, with a stronger emphasis on real teaching practice and professional development.
