Overview of Food Handler Card

Handle Food Safely. Protect Customers. Be Ready for Every Shift.

One missed handwash. One tray of chicken was stored above the salad greens. One shift worked while sick. That's all it takes to make someone's meal the reason they end up in urgent care.

The Food Handler Card course teaches food workers how to spot these moments before they turn into a health code violation—or worse, a customer getting sick. Real workplace scenarios, short lessons, and a final assessment stand between you and a card you can hand your employer today.

Could You Spot the Mistake?

A worker peels off used gloves and pulls on a new pair—without washing hands in between.

A pan of raw chicken sits on the shelf above a bin of washed lettuce.

An employee comes in for their shift a few hours after a night of vomiting.

A cutting board holds raw beef, gets a quick wipe with a towel, and goes straight into slicing tomatoes for the salad bar.

None of these look like emergencies. Each one is exactly how foodborne illness starts. This course trains you to catch them—before a customer ever does.

Why This Training Matters

Food can turn unsafe at any point: receiving, storage, prep, cooking, holding, service, or cleanup. Most of the time, it's not one big failure—it's a small habit that slipped:

  • Skipping a handwash between tasks

  • Touching ready-to-eat food with bare hands

  • Reusing gloves across different jobs

  • Storing raw meat above prepped food

  • Letting food sit too long in the danger zone

  • Wiping a cutting board instead of washing it

  • Working a shift while sick

  • Mixing sanitizer wrong

  • Missing an allergen on a shared prep surface

  • Ignoring a torn bag or a mouse dropping in the corner

None of these require malice — just a moment of not knowing, or not stopping to check. This course is built for restaurants, cafés, grocery stores, food trucks, caterers, cafeterias, bakeries, convenience stores, and anywhere else food changes hands.

What You'll Walk Away Knowing How to Do

  • Spot biological, chemical, physical, and allergen hazards before they reach a plate

  • Wash your hands the right way, at the right moments—not just when it's convenient

  • Use gloves and utensils so they protect food instead of just looking like they do

  • Keep raw and ready-to-eat food from ever touching, sharing a shelf, or sharing a knife

  • Read a food thermometer and know what the number actually means

  • Cook, hold, cool, reheat, and thaw food without creating a bacteria breeding ground

  • Catch a bad delivery—a leaking box, wrong temperature, torn seal—before it goes into storage

  • Clean a surface versus actually sanitizing it (they're not the same thing)

  • Store chemicals so they never end up near food, on purpose or by accident

  • Recognize when an allergen question needs a real answer, not a guess

  • Know which symptoms mean you should call your manager before you clock in

  • Spot early signs of pests before they become an infestation

  • Speak up when something's wrong—because staying quiet is its own risk

Real Scenarios, Not Just Definitions

Throughout the course, you'll work through situations like the following:

  • A cashier handling cash, then prepping food without washing hands

  • Raw meat stored above ready-to-eat ingredients in a walk-in

  • A fridge reading a few degrees warmer than it should

  • A delivery with a leaking, damaged case

  • Sanitizer mixed at the wrong concentration

  • A customer asking if a dish contains a specific allergen

  • A coworker reporting vomiting or diarrhea before a shift

  • Cooked food left out on the counter past its safe window

  • A cutting board reused for a different food without a real wash

  • Gloves worn through three different tasks without a change

These aren't hypotheticals—they're the exact decisions food workers face every week.

What Sets This Course Apart

Built around decisions, not definitions. You'll spend more time in "what would you do here" scenarios than memorizing terms.

Real workplace examples from restaurants, retail food counters, catering kitchens, cafeterias, and food trucks — not generic stock scenarios.

Short, direct modules designed to be finished in one sitting, with knowledge checks that reinforce the habit, not just the fact.

One assessment, one card. Pass the final assessment, and your Food Handler Card will be available immediately in your account.

Works on your schedule. Complete it on your phone between shifts or at a computer at home — your progress saves automatically.

Food Handler Card vs. Food Manager Certification

These are two different credentials for two different jobs.

Food Handler Card — for anyone who preps, handles, stores, or serves food. Covers hygiene, handwashing, cross-contamination, time/temperature control, cleaning, illness reporting, and allergens.

Food Manager Certification—for supervisors and persons-in-charge. Covers running a food-safety program: overseeing staff practices, managing regulatory compliance, corrective actions, and training others. It requires a separate, manager-level exam.

Passing this course does not make you a certified food protection manager—if that's what your role requires, look for our Food Manager Certification course instead.

Is This Card Accepted Where You Work?

Food-handler card requirements — and which training providers are accepted — vary by state, county, city, and employer. Before you enroll, check:

  • Whether your job or jurisdiction requires a card at all

  • Whether this specific provider is accepted locally

  • Whether a separate health-department registration is also needed

  • How long the card stays valid in your area

[Check your state's requirements →]

This card is currently accepted in the jurisdictions listed on our acceptance page. It is not a substitute for jurisdiction-specific certification where local law requires a government-issued card—check before you buy if you're unsure.

For Employers

Bulk-enroll your team, assign training, and track completion from one dashboard — useful for onboarding, seasonal ramp-up, annual refreshers, or corrective retraining after an inspection issue.

Employer accounts include volume pricing, progress tracking, downloadable completion records, and invoicing on request. This course is a strong foundation, but it's not a replacement for your own equipment training, house procedures, and active supervision.

Ready to Get Your Food Handler Card?

The choices you make during a shift — when to wash your hands, how to store raw meat, whether to say something about a fever — are what actually keep people safe. This course gives you the judgment to make the right call, not just the answer key.
