NCFE Level 2 Functional Skills Qualification in English is a GCSE level 4 or grade C equivalent and nationally recognised certification. No pre-entry requirements or minimum age are required for this qualification.

Exam Structure:

This qualification will be assessed via 1 controlled assessment and 2 external assessments.

The external assessments comprise the following components:

  • Reading
  • Writing

The controlled assessment comprises the following component:

  • Speaking, Listening and Communicating

Please be mindful that registering for the official exam carries a separate £100 registration fee.

Reading:

Test comprises multiple choice, short open response and medium open response questions.

Duration = 60 minutes

Number of marks = 30

Writing:

Test comprises two tasks where 42% of marks assess spelling, punctuation and grammar

Duration = 60 minutes

Number of marks = 44

Speaking, listening and communicating:

  • A 5-minute presentation 
  • Linked question and answer session in groups of three to four 
  • A 15-minute formal discussion together in groups of three to five learners.

Duration = Formal 15 minutes and Up to 25 minutes in total

Number of marks = N/A
